It is learned that prominent businessman S Sarfuddin Ahmed Santu established the mosque at his own initiative on December 16, 2003, at cost of Tk 20 crore with the help of 2,10,000 construction workers.
While entering through the main gate of the mosque and Eidgah complex built on 14 acres of land, a pond will be seen on the right side. The pond, surrounded by colorful flowers and fruit trees, has been dug in such a way that the whole reflection of the mosque can be seen in the water. There is a mosaic ghat in the pond. Two fountains have been installed at the entrance of the mosque just opposite the ghat.
The center of the main mosque is located to the west of the pond. To the north end, there is a madrasa named Malika Begum Hafizia Madrasa and Orphanage – named after the founder’s mother.
There is a huge lake on three sides of the Guthia Mosque Complex which also serves as a security fence around the complex. There is a cemetery on two and a half acres of land in the east-south corner of the mosque.
There is a car parking lot and separate Wudu place and toilets for men and women in the north-east corner. There is also a helipad in the west-south corner of the mosque, but the fruit and flower gardens in the courtyard of the entire complex captivate the visitors including the worshipers.
There is a minaret about 193 feet high to the south of the main mosque with nine big and small domes. Ayatul Kursi, Surah Ar-Rahman and other verses and surahs of Al-Quran have been written in different places around the mosque building.
Apart from this, to enhance the beauty of the mosque building, design work has been done in different places with stained glass, precious marble stones, granite and ceramics. Besides, there are also light fixtures around the mosque and Eidgah complex – which enhances the beauty of the mosque at night. The round-the-clock power system has its own two generators with 150/15 KVA power along the line.
The design of the mosques imitates the designs of different mosques in different countries of the Middle East. Besides, the pillars of the mosque are made of soil from various holy places of the world and Zamzam water.
Inside the mosque, about 1500 worshipers can perform prayers together and 5000 more on the outside. There are separate prayer places for men and women. And in the Eid Jamaat, 20,000 people gather in the entire Eidgah complex.
“The mosque has made Barisal stand out to the world. As its fame spread across the country, the mosque also attracted people from outside the country,” said local resident Sardar Sohail.
The mosque is not just a sight to behold, so many ‘modern words’ have been arranged inside. A person who prays twice while standing in the congregation will want to pray here again and again.
The worshipers perform five prayers in this mosque. Besides, one of the largest Eid congregations of Barishal was held in this complex, said Md. Siddiqur Rahman, Imam Hafez of the mosque. “As the number of worshipers is increasing day by day, the presence of general people to see the artistry of the mosque and the natural beauty has also increased.”
He said there is an orphanage next to the mosque named after the mother of the founder S Sarfuddin Ahmed. There are multiple students. The cemetery inside the mosque complex has graves for the helpless and poor. Besides, the whole area has created a pleasant environment by planting various fruit and flower trees including the lake, Md. Siddiqur Rahman added.

Bell’s Park is the central park of Barisal city located beside band road. Bangabandhu Udyan popularly known as Bell’s Park is a historic urban park and recreation area situated at the heart of Barisal, a city in south-central Bangladesh. This park is one of the beautiful areas in Barisal with a playground, walkway, helipad, many trees and a lake adjacent to it.
The park was constructed in 1896 by subscriptions during the magistracy of Beatson Bell to celebrate the visit of Sir Alexander Mackenzie, Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal. At that time, it was laid out in the open space between the civil lines and the riverside road. Kirtankhola river used to be located just beside the park and many palm trees were planted across the road. The park was named after Beatson Bell to recognize his contribution to the city development, Muslim education and public health of Barisal people.
The park has been the principal playground of the city for decades and is the center of all sports and athletic activities. It has been also used for huge public meeting where Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Ziaur Rahman, Hussain Muhammad Ershad, Sheikh Hasina, Khaleda Zia and other national leaders came and gave a speech to people. It also hosts many other social and cultural events yearly. The park was renamed as Bangabandhu Udyan in 1996 by the ruling party and a stage and Bangabandhu mural was built in memory of his first visit to Barisal to join the public meeting there in 1972
In 2011, Shawkat Hossain Hiron, former mayor of the city, took initiatives for the significant development and beautification of the park. Walkway surrounded by the park, flower plants, benches, and illumination, was done at a cost of around 1 Crore Taka.
With the commissioning of the bridge on the river Payra at Lebukhali, a milestone has been achieved in connecting by road the extreme south of the coastal areas with the rest of the country.
